Department: Art Department Budget Title: Assistant/Associate Professor Local Title: Assistant/Associate Professor of Art Ceramics Posting Date: October 25, 2010 Salary Level: TBD Duties: The State University of New York at New Paltz Art Department seeks an Assistant /Associate Professor of Ceramics.Full-time tenure-track (10 month) position, typical teaching load of 18 credits (6 courses) per academic year, as well as advising, departmental and university committee service, continuing professional activity/scholarly research. Active scholarship, committed teaching, and service on standing department and college committees is expected and required for tenure. The Art Department Chair position is filled by tenured faculty through a three-year rotation: candidates must be willing to accept the possibility of these responsibilities in the future.Specific teaching includes the courses Basic Ceramics, Ceramic Materials, Ceramic Sculpture, Design and Production, Clay and Glaze Materials, Contemporary Issues in Clay, and graduate Ceramics coursework.The Ceramics program serves students in the Master of Fine Arts program and students in the Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Science in Visual Arts, and Bachelor of Science in Art Education programs.Ceramics at SUNY New Paltz is an expansive program that regards and embraces tradition as well as change in formats, material exploration and content. The program seeks to inform the students in a progressive, cross-disciplinary way in areas of new process and digital media explorations. It encourages critical studies and writing within the context of a traditional, materials-based ceramics curriculum. There is desire to expand the depth of critical thinking, writing and publishing in the field; this position provides an opportunity to enhance the program in this direction. Qualifications: Candidate should possess an MFA in Studio with a specialization or concentration in the field of Ceramics. The candidate must have the ability and interest to develop coursework related to ceramics techniques, technology, design; and seminars in graduate and undergraduate art and conceptual theory related to the field of Ceramics. Demonstrated proficiency in a wide range of ceramic traditional and contemporary techniques and technology is essential. Knowledge in the areas of contemporary and digital techniques and technologies, material exploration, clay and glaze design. Knowledge of and experience in critical writing in Ceramics is desirable.
