ACAD Ceramics is pleased to host the annual 1000 Miles Apart Conference, October 3, 4 and 5 , 2013.
Everyone interested is invited and encouraged to attend the conference events free of charge.
The conference will include our featured Guest Artists workshops and
presentations (Bios and images further down in this post!), the
Participant’s Exhibition, lunchtime presentations, cup exchange, social
events – including a reception for the exhibition in Gallery 371, ACAD
(Friday 5 to 7 pm with refreshments and snacks) and student led
presentations of the participating institutions, highlighting our
vibrant western Ceramics Programs. We would like to acknowledge the
ACAD Scholarly Research and Creativity Initiatives through the Rawlinson
Fund for their generous support of this event.
We have a full schedule of events starting at 9 a.m. on Thursday October 3rd. The following is the basic schedule to date. We suggest if you are coming from out of town, arriving the night before.

ACAD Ceramics Students and Greg Payce, Katrina Chaytor, Brad Keys, Sean O’Connell, Robin Lambert
As a student run conference, ACAD Ceramics students have played a big
role in the selection of presenting artists and the conference
itinerary. We also are pleased to have our Ceramics Visiting
Artist/Instructor 2013/14, Sean O’Connell present at our conference. We
introduce our Guest Artists for 1000 Miles Apart here, in the order of
their appearance:
Sean O’Connell
Sean O’Connell is a studio potter, recently from Helena, MT where he
was the 2012/13 Windgate Fellow at the Archie Bray Foundation. He has
been involved in the arts since an early experience as a silversmith’s
apprentice at the age of thirteen in Fayetteville, AR. He attended
college at the Kansas City Art Institute several years later, and upon
completing his BFA in Sculpture, Sean became increasingly interested in
making functional pottery. This led to many years of independent
research, study and practice. After several years working as an
instructor in community art centers throughout the Chicago area, Sean
pursued his MFA in Ceramics at the School for American Crafts, Rochester
Institute of Technology in western New York. Shortly after he was the
2009 Salad Days Artist in Residence at Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts
in Newcastle, ME. In 2011 Sean was accepted as a long term Artist in
Resident at the Archie Bray Foundation. In the course of finishing up
his time at the Bray, Sean is continuing to make quality functional
ceramics, exhibiting nationally, and regularly gives workshops and
lectures around the country.

Ryan McKerley
Ryan Mckerley started making pots while he was an
art student at Abilene Christian University in West Texas. In 1995,
after receiving his BFA at Abiline Christian University, he moved to
Austin and began an apprenticeship with Billy Ray Mangham. As his
apprenticeship continued, Ryan developed his pottery (and water carving
technique), taught children and adults and began building his own kilns.
Today he divides his time between his ceramic studio technician duties
at the Dougherty Arts Center, organizing the Art of the Pot Studio!
Tour, and teaching/exhibiting around the U.S.

Steve L. Gorman
Steve Gorman attended Central Missouri State University receiving a
BFA in Art Education in 1985 and his MA in 1995. Gorman held teaching
positions in the Centerview School District for 7 years and theNorth
Kansas City School District for 18 years. Recently retired from his 25
year teaching career, Gorman is able to pursue his art career full time.
Gorman’s work is in the collection of the Nerman Museum of
Contemporary Art – Campus Collection; the Oppenheimer Collection; the
Southern Illinois University; the Waterloo Museum of Art; Baker
University; and many private collections. He has shown his work at
Sherry Leedy Contemporary Arts in Kansas City and Componere Gallery in
St. Louis. In 2011, Gorman had a solo exhibit at the Nerman Museum of
Contemporary Art.

1000 Miles Apart – 2011 Ceramics Conference
September 29 – October 1

The Ceramics Area at the School of Art, University of Manitoba will host 1000 Miles Apart from September 29 to October 1, 2011. 1000 Miles Apart will feature a number of high caliber artists who will present lectures and demonstrations, and provide a forum for exchange between students, faculty, and professionals in the field.
John Balistreri, professor at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, will share his latest research on using clay as a printing material in the rapid prototyping of three-dimensional forms. Virginia Scotchie, world renowned for her energetic and stimulating ceramic workshops, will join us from the University of South Carolina. Paul Mathieu, professor of ceramics at Emily Carr University in Vancouver, will present a lecture on his recent art and industry experiences in China, and provide a critical view of the state of ceramics in the 21st century. Rory MacDonald, professor of ceramics at NSCAD University in Halifax, will present the closing address at 1000 Miles Apart, a lecture that is free and open to the public as well as conference participants.
1000 Miles Apart will include an exhibition at Gallery One One One in the FitzGerald Building. The exhibition will include work by ceramics students, faculty, and the visiting artists. Concurrent with the conference, visitors may investigate site specific installations by artist Rory MacDonald on the University of Manitoba campus and beyond.
Concurrently with the conference, Winnipeg Art Gallery is hosting a lecture on September 29 at 7:00 p.m. by Greg Payce who is participating in the exhibition Precise: Craft Refined. This event is open to the public and admission will be charged.

registration fee is $50.00, payable by cash or cheque to the University of Manitoba.

I’m not going to lie. I have been basically stalking Julia Galloway‘s work online for years. It’s exquisite, it is beautiful to behold, it is layered and conceptually intriguing. So when i heard she was going to be presenting at this years 1000 Miles Apart student conference in Red Deer, there was no holding me back from finally seeing her work in person. I was not dissapointed in the slightest. The work is even more incredible than the images allow you to ascertain. And to top it off, Julia in person is so lovely, generous, honest, humorous and thought provoking. I only wish i could have seen more of her demos and heard her speak for more than just a morning. I have returned home inspired.

TERI FRAME received a BFA from Kansas City Art Institute in 2005 and MFA from Pennsylvania State University in 2008. She is the Visiting Artist/Instructor in Ceramics at ACAD this year.
ROBERT HARRISON will install one of his brick sculptures that he is famous for over the week of the September 27 to October 3rd. Robert lives and works in Helena, Montana.
DAVID BIAN is a Chinese ceramic artist who works at the Pottery Workshop in Shanghai and will be at RDC as an artist-in-residence for September -October. www.potteryworkshop.org

Silent Auction
1000 Miles apart is a student run and supported conference that is free to all the attendees. Please help support the students by donating one of your ceramic pieces for a silent auction that will be held over the duration of the conference. Student reps will be on hand to receive your works and put them on display when you arrive to the event.
Exhibition
Students and instructors from the participating institutions are invited to send works for an exhibition of ceramics that will be up for the duration of the conference. Please send the details for the labels in advance to: [email protected]
Ceramics Program Showcase
a representative from each institution is invited to give a short presentation on their program. Please burn the presentation to a CD in PowerPoint format.
Food on Campus
Beverages and food are available on Campus on Friday, there are various locations but the closest is ‘The Patch’ just outside the doors to Ceramics. The Library Cafe serves Starbucks coffee and will be open Friday and Saturday to ensure that you can get your Lattes and Cappuccinos.

1000 MILES APART
A LITTLE HISTORY
The Red Deer College Ceramics Program is hosting the annual 1000 Miles Apart conference October 1st, 2nd and 3rd, 2010. This conference was first organized in 1989 by faculty and students from the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg and Red Deer College, Alberta. The distance between the institutions was the origin of the name 1000 Miles Apart. Participating institutions later included the University of Regina and Alberta College of Art + Design. Each year the conference is organized collectively and rotates to a new host institution for that year. It provides an excellent opportunity for students and faculty to meet and network, and creates a valuable forum to develop and strengthen the ceramics community in Western Canada. Members of the public, along with University of Regina, Red Deer College, and University of Manitoba, students and faculty from nearby Ceramics Programs are also invited to attend the conference events.
