SHIRO OTANI, 2010, wood-fired sake jug from Shigaraki clay, wheel-thrown with flying ash glaze; h.16cm, w.9cm; Photos: Robin Roberts

On Sunday May 1, 2011 at Reedy Marsh Pottery near Deloraine, Shiro Otani made pots using local clay as part of The Reedy Marsh Woodfire Challenge. During this extravaganza of clay, kiln building, wood-firing, and kiln-centric food preparation, Shiro pots were fired in a unique kiln built by members of his team. Shiro’s final gesture, as the evening reached its conclusion, was to donate a piece of his work, made at his pottery in Shigaraki, Japan, for the benefit of the Tasmanian Ceramics Association.

About the potter: Shiro Otani of Shigaraki Japan has won many major awards for his work. He has a reputation for extracting the optimum from his materials and kilns. As a young potter, Shiro made the most of unpopular zones within communal kilns, executing flashed and lightly ashed work of great subtlety and beauty. Read more about his life and work here:http://www.artistpotters.com/artist_potters/otani/index.htm

Auction items requested – North Carolina Pottery Center

The NC Pottery Center Board and the auction committee would like to request a donation of your work for the 2011 annual fundraising auction. Your support is very important to help sustain the NCPC, which pays tribute to potters across our State. The NC Pottery Center works to promote North Carolina potters and to keep the public aware of the living traditions that continue in North Carolina. The NC Pottery Center’s mission is to not only represent the past, but to also let the public know about the ongoing tradition. Auction donations must be in hand by May 2nd, 2011 in order to be photographed and listed online. An inventory sheet to be delivered with your work is also enclosed. If you have questions or need assistance you may call Nicole at 336-873-8430 or e-mail at [email protected]. In the Fall of 2010 we initiated a capital campaign to help sustain the Center. We have also started conversation with East Carolina University to form a potential educational partnership, and are seeking funding for a Director and monthly expenses. As with all non-profits fundraising continues to be challenging but your donations and support will allow us to implement exciting possibilities and ensure continued success and viability of the North Carolina Pottery Center. We hope you will stand with us to keep this wonderful tribute to clay viable and ongoing by supporting our annual auction. Sincerely
