online event: Craft in Art Therapy: Diverse Approaches to the Transformative Power of Craft Materials and Methods

Craft Inspires Series Event

About this Event

Fuller Craft Museum is excited to host a panel discussion based on the new book Craft in Art Therapy: Diverse Approaches to the Transformative Power of Craft Materials and Methods (Routledge, 2020).

Craft in Art Therapy is the first book dedicated to illustrating the incorporation of craft materials and methods into art therapy theory and practice. It demonstrates that when practiced in a culturally sensitive and socially conscious manner, craft practices are more than therapeutic—they also hold transformational potential.

The panel will be moderated by the book’s editor Lauren Leone, and will feature contributing authors Mikey Anderson, Marilyn Holmes, Rachel Wallis, and Sandie Yi.

Panelists will share how they have used craft in their own art and self-care, and in individual, group, and community art therapy practice. Discussion and audience Q&A to follow will explore the therapeutic benefits of craft materials and media, as well as craft’s potential to build community and to support individuals in caring for themselves and each other.

This is a virtual event to be held live on Zoom at 1pm EST on January 16, 2021. You will receive the zoom link with your ticket confirmation via email.

movie day: Clay @ Home: Artist Talk with Lisa Naples

Join Jennifer Zwilling as she leads a talk with artist Lisa Naples. The Clay Studio serves artists in the community and its community with art. We were founded in 1974 by a group of 5 ceramic artists seeking a shared space and mutual support, but they soon realized their work embraced something broader: to educate and engage the larger community with the joy of making in clay. Today The Clay Studio supports 65 Resident and Associate artists and welcomes 4,700 students in their classrooms every year, while also serving 3,800 schoolchildren and adults in the Philadelphia area. We offer classes and workshops year round in handbuilding, wheel-throwing, casting and glazing, for people of all ages, from beginner to advanced. These online how-to demos are tutorials created by ceramic artists that anyone can do at home. They celebrate the idea that homemade is handmade, and they connect artists with people right where they live. Enjoy! Conference Tour

“One of the goals to the New Clay Conference is to strengthen our clay community and highlight all of the great clay going on already.

We are inviting local studios, galleries and artists to get involved by adding yourselves to our tour.  Leading up to and during the weekend we are encouraging our participants to tour all of the great clay in Ottawa.  We are partnering with a variety of galleries and studios that are going to host exhibitions in cooperation with the New Clay Conference.  If you have a studio or gallery in Ottawa and surrounding area and there are ceramic artists involved we want to hear from you.  You do not need to host a special exhibition, if you already have something in your gallery let us know and we can share that here.  No gallery space but you have a studio that is open to the public? Let us know that too.  We really want to create the ultimate list of studios and galleries in Ottawa that are opening their doors to visitors during the New Clay Conference.  Saturday and Sunday we are going to keep our participants pretty busy so we hope that your study/galleries are open leading up to the weekend as well.”
