Delineate: New works by Jenn Demke-Lange and Elizabeth Burritt

Two of the most amazing ceramic artists currently in Alberta have teamed together to present you with an exhibition of eye candy galore. Not only are their individual artistic practices gorgeous but they’ve also collaborated on some work for the show. What do you get when you put two inspiring ceramic ladies together? One not to be missed exhibition.

You’ve got Medalta to thank for this one. Hope it makes you smile.

The Big Idea from Medalta on Vimeo.

Aaron is currently working with experimental, highly translucent soft paste porcelain that matures at an extremely low temperature. His interest in this new material, for which there are few historical precedents, grows out of a concern for the environment and reducing the carbon footprint of his practice.

At the same time, he has become interested in contemporary communications technologies – QR Codes in particular. He is experimenting with the merging of ceramic art with these new forms of communication.

This is Aaron’s latest Big Idea. We hope you enjoy it.

(12 spaces available) This ten-day workshop focuses on the connection between the food we cook and the pottery we cook and serve it in. The emphasis of the workshop is on repetition, focus, and getting the details right. We will divide our time between the (improvised) bakeshop and the pottery studio, using the philosophy of mindfulness and creativity through practice and repetition. In the kitchen, our focus is on artisan hearth breads. Learn how to improvise a hearth oven in your home oven, and how to mix, ferment, shape, and bake beautiful loaves using simple natural ingredients and time. In the ceramics studio, choose a form (or 2) to practice and develop and delve into the details of scale, weight, proportion, edges, and surface. In between we find the connections between food and pots, how they converse and strengthen each other. The workshop will be punctuated with daily demo’s, tastings and discussions, all intended to make you consider the humble objects you make for daily use and consumption more deeply and fully. Medalta: Winter 2011 Intro & Inter Ceramic Classes begin, Medicine Hat College

Introduction to Pottery
From the dawn of mankind, clay has recorded our creativity. The earliest humans skillfully formed beautiful items from clay to satisfy their artistic souls. Come explore and learn both the ancient and modern clay skills of hand building and wheel throwing. Beginners and those with some clay experience can gain confidence by creating artistic and functional pottery pieces that are glazed and fired. Clay and tools may be purchased at the first class for a small additional fee. Enjoy the thrill of bringing clay to life with your own hands! Instructors for these courses are visiting artists who are participating in the Medalta International Artist in Residence Program in partnership with Friends of Medalta.
