Playing with fire We
have five talented presenters who will provide instructions on
alternative firing surfaces, firing processes and different types of
kilns. We will be doing three hands on firing sessions: raku, aluminum
foil saggar, and pit firing. You’ll learn skills to create your own
approach to surfaces and how they relate to different alternative
firings. Presenters will show you how to play with fire and have you
ready to experiment in your studio.
Whether
you throw or handbuild, this conference has something for you to take
back to your studio. This conference is open to artists at all levels:
from enthusiastic amateur, to the teacher, and for the professional. No
matter your skill level, if you’re open to learning and connecting with
other ceramic artists then this is the conference for YOU!

gas-fired kiln suitable for raku; Learn how to fire large work in a
small kiln; How to apply decoration in alternative firing processes:

applying latex and glaze, and the addition of luster lines; to create

Tell a story in clay
Each of these talented artists tells us a personal story in clay. Each
presenter treats the surface in a unique manner, and will share their
surface techniques with YOU over the two-day conference. Explore the
possibilities with surfaces by combining new techniques to what you
already know. Come and find out how to tell your narrative in clay.
This conference is open to artists at all levels: from enthusiastic
amateur, to the teacher, and for the professional. No matter what level

Attendees will learn how to…
• Decorate utilizing the Majolica process
• Visually organize the surface for the viewer
• Use line, color, proportion and other design devices to give personality and resonance to a piece
• Use handbuilding method combining metal and low fire sculpture clay together.
• Incorporate other materials into sculpture such as dipping wire in casting slip, fabrics, stuffed animals, etc.
• Utilize nontraditional surface techniques on wet clay, bisque and post fired work.
• Use low fire oxides, glaze, and encaustic wax for finishing.
• Make multiple forms on the wheel and altering them as well.
• Do surface techniques using commercial underglazes, sgrafitto techniques, and multiple glazing methods.
• Carve, sprig, use sgraffitio, and mishima surface techniques.
• Use wax resist techniques on a green-ware multi-sided, slab constructed, and vessel-like porcelain object.
• Use china painting

- To set up a simple screen print lab in the clay studio

- Make paper templates for a slab built spout

NEW! Announcing Potters Council Student Juried Exhibition
The 2012 Potters Council Online Student Juried Exhibition was created to recognize full-time college students who are Potters Council student members in an online exhibition. Our interest is to support the Potters Council student members who create ceramic art.
We are pleased to announce our jurors, Paula Smith and James Connell. In addition to choosing the award recipients, the jurors will offer personalized feedback for each entry. Both instructors have been instrumental in ceramic arts education, and Potters Council appreciates their support of our endeavors to recognize our student members currently enrolled in college.

Potters Council Student Online Exhibition: “New Ground“
The Potters Council announces its’ first online juried exhibition of student members’ work to be held August 1, 2012 to September 30, 2012.
The name of the show is “New Ground“ As a student, you’re exploring your opportunities, pushing the limits of your capabilities, and expanding the techniques you’re learning. “New Ground” should be about something that is personal to each applicant, whether it is subject matter, technical, firing, forming or a surface approach. The work submitted should reflect a new development or step in the growth of the applicants work.
