This residency is an excellent opportunity for artistic development within an innovative and supportive ceramic community. The residency requires an emphasis on making, learning and sharing the process of creating with clay. It includes a studio, kiln firings, a solo exhibition and more. The Visiting and Resident Artists program at the Lawrence Arts Center offers community members a unique opportunity to study visual arts with practitioners of varied backgrounds and diverse skills. New artists are invited each year to become a part of the Lawrence community and share their professional skills with Lawrence Arts Center students and artists.
These 12-month Artist in Residence programs are designed to provide a creative and supportive environment in which artists may immerse themselves in creating new work and expanding their own understanding of their medium and other media available at the Arts Center. The residencies are a multi-faceted experience including teaching, community outreach, interaction with other artists, and studio care, and culminate in an exhibition of new work.

Ceramics Residency
The residency will begin August 1 and end on July 31. The ideal candidate should have an MFA in ceramics, and be self-directed and able to work independently. Preference is given to candidates who have demonstrated artistic excellence as well as interest in experimentation and innovative techniques.
- The resident will be provided studio space, $1,000 per month stipend and furnished housing, free dental care, free firings, and 24 hour access to all studios, including ceramics, print, metal, photography, and digital media.
- Residents will teach a minimum of two classes per session (4 sessions a year) with opportunities to teach more.
- The Arts Center will facilitate structured and unstructured opportunities to engage with the universities and broader community, and the resident will make at least one presentation each to the school district, university, and public.
- Residents perform 15 hours per week in studio maintenance. Maintenance of ceramics studio includes: assisting in loading/unloading and firing kilns, mixing glazes and slips, recycling clay, and providing general studio maintenance and upkeep.
- The resident will assist in annual studio fundraisers and assist in the visiting artist program.
- Residents will have the opportunity for a solo exhibition of their work in the Lawrence Arts Center gallery. Curatorial and technical support will be provided by the Arts Center.
Printmaking Residency
The John Talleur Print Studio is the only community print shop in Kansas. Its facilities support a broad range of printmaking techniques, including intaglio, monoprint, relief, silkscreen, book arts, and letterpress, and offer access to Takach, Vandercook, Hoe (Washington-style), and Griffin presses. The studio emphasizes innovative and solventless techniques, and the intaglio facilities use all low toxic grounds and removers.

Northern Clay Center
The McKnight Artist Residency for Ceramic Artists program, in its 23rd year at NCC, intends to recognize and support mid-career ceramic artists whose work demonstrates exceptional artistic merit and who have already proven their abilities in the field. The program is intended to provide these ceramic artists with an opportunity to be in residence for three months at Northern Clay Center, where they can develop their own work and, at the same time, exchange ideas and knowledge with Minnesota ceramic artists. Up to three, 3-month residencies will be awarded in 2020, to take place during the 2021 calendar year, through a competitive application process. NCC will invite one or two other artists through a nominative process.
Each resident artist will receive a $6,000 award (for a three-month residency), studio space provided at no cost, and a glaze and firing allowance. During the residency, each artist will present a public lecture, for which they will receive an additional honorarium. At the culmination of the grant period, recipients will be featured in a catalog and group exhibition at Northern Clay Center. The exhibition will also travel to 3 – 5 sites around the state of Minnesota. Recipients are also required to submit a final report at the end of the grant period.

Open to emerging and established visual artists in ceramic or overlapping interdisciplinary practices. Applications are accepted on-line only.
The program provides ceramic artists the ability to work in a supportive community environment of like-minded individuals, to share their expertise and vision, to inspire excellence and create work at the highest level in a nurturing and creative environment.
The residency is a multi-faceted experience that will include opportunities for teaching, community outreach, interaction with other artists, and studio care, and will culminate in an exhibition of new work.
Professional Development, Opportunities & Obligations
The Resident Artist Program offers individuals the opportunity to further develop their work, and to establish professional practices and standards. Both Centers offer the support of their staff and facilities to help Resident Artists reach the next stage of development in their careers.
The Caetani Centre, ACNO & VCAC will facilitate workshops, receptions, and public programming based around the participating artist’s work. All organizations work together to provide additional opportunities for public educational programs, artist presentations, and feedback from other artists and mentors. The artist may propose additional events and community programming if they choose.
As a relatively new program, the Caetani Centre is interested in feedback and constructive criticism, and requests that the participant submit an exit survey upon completion of their project.
Artists-in-Residence are requested to leave a piece of art in the community, if possible.
Exhibition Opportunity
Residents will have the opportunity to exhibit their work in the Vernon Community Arts Centre’s Lobby Gallery, with technical support from the VCAC. Curatorial support is provided by the Caetani Center, and the artist will contribute to and receive a small publication about their residency and exhibition.
Selection of Applicants
The program is open to both emerging and established artists. The ideal candidate should have a minimum of post-secondary training completed or in progress with a major in ceramics, be self-directed and able to work independently. Preference is given to candidates who have demonstrated artistic excellence as well as interest in experimentation and innovative techniques.
The successful CeramAIR Resident has a genuine commitment to working with clay, a willingness to work with the local community, and a desire to grow in the development of their own work. They bring a high level of professionalism and competency to the studio that enriches the quality of our programs and facility.
A selection committee composed of arts professionals will review and select candidates for the program. Selection is based on the body of work presented, cv and project proposal.
