Responsibilities
and Duties:
Locate, order, and test raw materials, as well as keep
up-to-date concerning new raw materials and products. This includes
researching and proposing suitable alternatives to obsolete materials,
providing information to faculty and students regarding materials
properties, and advising as to which products may best suit their
particular needs.

Store materials when received and perform semi-annual physical inventories. This involves lifting heavy bags of materials.

Keep proper records in connection with the undergraduate and graduate
glaze labs and individual student purchases in the store. Manage
accounts payable and accounts receivable activities for the Grinding
Room.

Maintain and periodically update the Grinding Room website.

Research and implement a digital library with consistent photo images of
glaze/clay/reduction results, images with formula/recipe accessible
on web site.

Research disposal methodology for semi-solid non-hazardous waste.

Supervise and inform students regarding the use of equipment, mixing
procedures, materials use, and substitution. Provide instruction and
supervision to students in safe and competent use of raw materials,
mixing equipment, and laboratories.

Maintain a clean and safe working environment, including the basic
upkeep of equipment and facilities. Manage and conduct safety training
and ensure compliance with safety rules, regulations, and protocols.

Participate in University safety training and comply with safety rules,
regulations and protocols.

Participate in material tracking from procurement to disposal regarding hazardous material handling techniques.

Develop a digital library of glaze samples and formulas.

Assist the Kiln Specialists in the kiln room as needed.

Supervise student assistants.

Perform additional duties and assist with special projects as assigned.

   
Requirements: Formal Education: MFA in Ceramic Art preferred; or
BFA with related experience in the field (ceramic supply store
experience or equivalent). Other undergraduate or graduate degrees will
be considered with related experience in ceramic art materials.

Experience: Working knowledge of materials and applications for all
ceramic art applications; experience in making ceramic art, preferably a
practicing artist.

Additional Knowledge/Skills: Must be able to lift approximately 50 lbs.

Must be able to operate heavy equipment, including forklifts and dump trucks.

Knowledge of kilns and clay mixers’ operation and maintenance.

state of the art ceramics facility where the tech is provided with an
office/studio space. The well equipped Ceramics studio has high-fire
electric kilns, two Bailey gas kilns, a Bourry box wood kiln and a
wood-fired salt kiln.

state of the art facilities of the Red Deer College Visual Art program. As the Ceramics
Technician, you will support both the Credit and Continuing Education Visual Art programs.
You will provide full technical support for students and instructors in ceramics. Duties

POSITION SUMMARY
Beginning Summer 2012, the full-time Ceramics Technician will oversee the day to day operations
of the Ceramics area.

POSITION DUTIES
– Clean and maintain the Ceramics Studio to ensure a safe working
environment.
– Ensure that clay, glazes and slip are always ready and available for student use (i.e., mix clay bodies and compound
glazes, and periodically test new clays and glazes).
– Maintain a
firing schedule which keeps work flowing through the ceramic
process in a timely fashion (i.e., .program, fire and supervise the
computer-controlled electric kiln; develop customized programs; train
faculty and students; etc.).
– Inventory, order and receive supplies and materials (i.e., clay and glaze chemicals, equipment repair
parts, safety equipment, etc.).
– Maintain and repair equipment (i.e., trobuleshoot kilns, change kiln elements, replace switches,
lubricate wheels, etc.). Clean and maintain kiln furniture.
– Maintain slip casting equipment and supervise its use (i.e., run slip
mixer and casting table daily, train faculty and students, etc.).
– Maintain and oversee studio safety rules and procedures to OSHA
standards. (i.e., provide respirators, gloves, goggles; ensure adequate ventilation of toxic fumes and mists, etc.).

Oversee,
direct and maintain efficient operation of studio (i.e., organize space,
maintain efficient flow of work and materials from forming through
finished piece, etc.).
 -Manage the Ceramics area budget.
– Hire, supervise and schedule work/study students and graduate
assistants (i.e., train, schedule, direct and monitor student workers on a daily basis.).
– Perform all other related duties as
assigned.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
Education:

Must have B.F.A. in ceramics or equivalent combination of education and experience; M.F.A. preferred.
Experience:
Technical knowledge of ceramics materials, processes, and equipment
required
Skills:Must
have ability to handle
computer-operated kilns; and ability and desire to upgrade and maintain
new ceramics skills as needed. Excellent verbal and interpersonal
skills and above average organizational and follow-up skills required.

Ceramics Tech Job Posting

The College seeks a Ceramics Technician to work closely with its ceramics faculty and students throughout the academic year managing the ceramics studio, beginning Fall 2011. The position involves repairs and maintenance of the equipment, troubleshooting student problems, instructing faculty/students how to use the equipment, and responding to faculty requests to meet the needs of their courses.

Extensive experience working with kilns, clay / glaze materials, and the capacity to use power tools is required. Applicants should be working artists who are interested in pursuing their professional work in the studio at the College. A studio is provided for the Technician.
