Position Summary:

Crafts Technician is responsible for maintaining all Crafts
facilities; including Ceramics, Fibers, Glass, Art Furniture, and
Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design. The Crafts Technician will cooperate
with faculty, staff and administration in facility development and
planning.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee Materials and equipment purchases;
  • Establish a maintenance schedule for all Crafts capital equipment;
  • Supervise work study students;
  • Monitor charging and firing cycles in the glass studio;
  • Monitor and operate kilns;
  • Monitor computer and temperature controls in glass and ceramic studios;
  • Ability to demonstrate and assist in the safe and proper use of equipment to students;
  • Service the needs of the students regarding the use of the facilities;
  • Perform additional duties as requested by Department Chair;
  • Work with faculty, staff and administration in facility and project planning;

Qualifications:

Must have strong interpersonal skills and be able to work effectively
with faculty, staff, and students. Organized, self-motivated, and
problem solving abilities are required. Undergraduate degree in Crafts
or Industrial Arts preferred. Mechanical and fabrication skill desired.
Ability to weld and an understanding of mechanical systems is a plus.
Must be flexible to work days, evenings, and weekend hours as required.

Job Description:

Provide the vision and skills to develop and articulate the programs
that fulfill the mission of the Worcester Center for Crafts. Provide
leadership for the faculty, staff and students who realize that mission.
Advocate the Craft Center to higher education administration and
numerous public and private entities. Develop and implement fundraising
efforts to support the Center’s programs. Coordinate the operation of
the academic program with representatives from Worcester State
University and the Worcester Consortium, and collaborate on academic
recruitment. Oversee and assess development of workshop, exhibition and
sales galleries, and overall marketing of Craft Center programs. Oversee
planning, budgeting, assessment, and reporting for all Craft Center
programs. The Executive Director serves as the Chief operating officer
of the Worcester Center for Crafts. The Executive Director reports to
the Board of Directors and to the Associate Vice President for
Continuing Education and Outreach of Worcester State University and is
responsible for the organization’s consistent achievement of its mission
and objectives.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategy and Planning
In partnership with board and staff:
1. Develop an implementation plan for the annual operation of the Center
2. Assure that the Center has a long range strategy that furthers its mission
3. Develop a strategy and implementation plan to increase community program attendance, including youth programming
4. Develop a strategy and implementation plan to develop continuing
education programs in conjunction with Worcester State University
5. Develop a strategy and implementation plan for facility maintenance and upgrades
Development
6. In partnership with the Office of Institutional Advancement at Worcester State University
7. Develop a comprehensive annual fundraising plan
8. Meeting with donors: corporate, private business, individual, and foundation
9. Develop the Center’s Capital Campaign and work closely with Board
members and Office of Institutional Advancement to clarify financial
targets and a plan for reaching them
Marketing
10. In partnership with the Office of Institutional Advancement at Worcester State University
11. Develop marketing strategies to promote the Center’s community based education programs and gallery shows and activities.
12. Develop marketing strategies to promote Continuing Education programs in Conjunction with Worcester State University.
Outreach and Advocacy
13. Represent the Worcester Center for Crafts in the regional non-profit community
14. Advocate for the Worcester Center for Crafts in the University Community

Programming
15. Partnership with WCC studio heads, faculty, and All- studio Committee
16. Plan and implement a schedule of adult classes and workshops
17. Plan and implement a schedule of youth classes and workshops

Fiscal Management
18. In partnership with board and staff:
19. Analyze financial information, make fiscally sound decisions, and ensure that the Center operates within budget guidelines
20. Provide the Board with accurate, concise financial information and
present options and recommendation to support sound financial decision
making.
21. Work with staff, finance committee, and the Board to make recommendations regarding the annual budget

Board Relationships
22. Recommend ways to improve board effectiveness within the context of the alliance with Worcester State University

23. Serve as a resource to the board and the tri boards of Worcester
State University to enhance overall understanding of the mission,
program and effectiveness of all Center Activities
Administration
24. In partnership with the personnel department at Worcester State University
25. Effectively recruit and manage all personnel, including paid staff, contractors, consultants
26. Ensure accurate job descriptions are developed, that performance
evaluations are held least annually, and that Worcester State University
Human Resource practices are in place
27. Ensure communication with and services for faculty and students of Worcester State University
28. Encourage staff development and education, and assist staff in applying their specialized knowledge to the operating plan.
29. See that an effective management team, with appropriate provision for succession is in place.

Requirements:

A master’s degree in arts administration or a graduate degree in an
appropriate visual arts field, and a minimum of two years cumulative
professional experience programming and/or managing and/or marketing
visual arts programs at established public or private organizations

General Description of the Position:

The Erb Memorial Union (EMU) is a multifaceted auxiliary that employs
90 staff and more than 300 student staff. The EMU has an operating
budget of 11 million dollars, and serves over 15,000 daily users during
the academic year. The Craft Center is a comprehensive arts program
program of the EMU. The individual in this position supervises one Craft
Center classified employee, 40 workshop instructors, and 20 student
staff. The Craft Center Assistant Coordinator, Administration serves as
an advocate for the program and the value of involvement in life-long
learning and pursuit of creative endeavors. The individual in this
position serves as a resource to and participating member of the larger
EMU staff. Craft Center Assistant Coordinator, Administration works
Monday through Friday, 10:00am-6:30pm. The Craft Center is open seven
days a week. Officers of Administration are expected to provide support
any and all days of the week in the event of a Craft Center accident, or
requirements of general operations, professional level representation
and special events.

Description of Duties:

Program Core Duties (30%)

Organize and coordinate 300+ workshops per year, including assembly, design and publication of term brochures.
Recruit, evaluate, and assist in hiring instructors.
Teach Craft Center workshops and provide informal instruction.
Develop, maintain, and instruct in Craft Center studio area as
appropriate, including purchase and repair of equipment and tools.
Oversee advertising and marketing of program.
Provide safety information/training on hazardous equipment and materials.
Promote
and serve as a campus resource to students, student groups, faculty and
staff, and campus committees in planning creative events.

Program Development (20%)

Assist in the management of the Craft Center program and facilities.
Provide input as a Craft Center Management Team member with setting long-range goals and program planning.
Serve as a member of the EMU Student Activities staff and assist in EMU programming activities.
Serve on EMU and University committees, task forces, and search committees as appropriate.
Create multicultural experiences for staff, students and volunteers, as well as participants.
Develop and administer tools to measure learning outcomes of participants.
Develop opportunities for students to learn and utilize leadership skills.
Develop
learning opportunities for students to apply knowledge from coursework
and increase their understanding of subject matter.

Staff Development and Supervision (25%)

Provide full supervisory responsibilities for one Craft Center classified staff.
Supervise set term work schedules, and train 20+ student staff in Craft
Center operations, policies, procedures and safety guidelines in studio
areas, with primary focus on customer service counter student staff.
Train student staff in excellent customer service skills.
Supervise 40 workshop instructors.
Provide continual training for students and staff on safe use of equipment and tools.
Oversee hiring process, administer progressive discipline and work
improvement plans. Terminate classified staff, student staff and
instructors as appropriate with Coordinator.
Provide professional
development opportunities, including multicultural training and/or
events for unclassified staff, classified staff, student staff and
volunteers.
Develop educational opportunities for Craft Center staff
and students with focus on student learning outcomes and evaluate
learning outcomes for student staff and volunteers.

Financial Management (15%)

Manage monthly payroll for classified staff, student employees and workshop instructors.
Oversee accounting transactions, invoice systems, and monthly printout reconciliation.
Manage internal invoice system.
Manage procurement card purchase systems and monthly statement reconciliation.
Monitor income and spending for workshop budgets.
Provide Craft Center Coordinator with recommendations regarding the purchase of equipment and tools.
Maximize revenue-producing opportunities within the scope of the Craft Center’s core purpose.

Campus and Community Collaboration (10%)

Promote the Craft Center programs to the University community and the community at large.
Assist EMU staff and students in the development of broadly based,
co-curricular programming that complements the academic mission of the
University including diversity initiatives.
Represent the Craft
Center and the EMU in campus-wide programs such as IntroDUCKtion, Oregon
Preview, University Graduation, etc.
Work with campus and the Eugene/Springfield communities on opportunities for potential collaboration.
Develop campus relationships between the Craft Center and academic departments, student groups, and other programs.
Develop relationships between the Craft Center and Eugene/Springfield
community organizations to enhance the Craft Center’s programs and the
local community experience.
Participate in EMU Strategic Plan initiatives and activities supporting the campus-wide Oregon 20/20 vision.

Experience and Education:

Minimum Qualifications:

2 years full time experience in administration, preferably in an arts related field
Proficiency in one or more art/craft area (one specialty being
ceramics, hot glass, woodworking or metal sculpture) including knowledge
of equipment/tools for areas of expertise
2 years full time experience in a supervisory capacity, preferably in a union environment
Demonstrated success in organizing a comprehensive programmatic offering.
Commitment to working in a higher education environment
Experience in providing instruction or teaching workshops/classes.
Competence and efficient computer skills for spreadsheets, payroll, word processing, graphics and design software programs
Bachelor’s degree.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse and multicultural populations.

Masters or Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art
