LAST CHANCE:
Register for a Workshop from Home!

In an effort to help make up for missed classes and workshops due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we are starting a new webinar series focused on techniques! We’re all used to working from home by now, so why not Workshop from Home?

Our first Workshop from Home webinar features ceramic artist and educator Ashley Kim! In this demonstration, we’ll take a deep dive into Ashley’s handbuilding and decorating techniques for one of her signature vase forms.

  • Learn to build an asymmetrical vase form using coils and slabs
  • Make instant lace transfers
  • Top it all off with stencil-resist and sgraffito decoration
  • and much more!

It’s just like an in-person workshop, but you are guaranteed a front row seat! Ask questions throughout, or during the Question and Answer Session at the end.
Registration is $35, and registrants can access a recording of the video for 30 days following the event to revisit techniques! Space is limited – Register today!

This open call is curated by Matt Rota and Elizabeth Winnel.

Matt Rota has spent the past 15 years working with clients in print and online including the New York Times, the New Yorker, Penguin Books, The LA Times, The Washington Post, Foreign Policy, The New Republic, Smithsonian, Variety, Buzzfeed, and many others. His illustrations focus primarily on global politics, criminal justice, social inequality, immigration, and poverty. Over the past ten years, he has taught illustration at the Maryland Institute College of Art, and The School of Visual Arts. Matt has written two books on drawing, Pencil Arts Workshop, and The Art of Ballpoint. Matt also has an extensive fine arts career, exhibiting his drawings in galleries internationally and serving on the board of directors at the New York Artists Equity Association.

Elizabeth Winnel instigates conversations about the use of body and ‘selfie’ imagery within cultural spaces and social media. Decontextualized imagery serves as a stand-in for larger meaning. Her approach invites viewer engagement but leaves room for the insertion of individualized perspective. Her works are not about specific stories or people, rather they function as prompts for discourse about figuration, body language, communication and culture.

residency opportunity: Green-Wood Cemetery

Green-Wood’s new Artist-in-Residence program was created for emerging and mid-career artists to directly engage with the site’s unique art, history, and nature. Since its founding in 1838, the Cemetery has inspired generations of painters, writers, and musicians. The artist selected for this program will continue in that rich tradition of creative expression.

The residency is open to those living in New York City and working in the visual and/or performing arts. Special consideration will be given to those whose final project can engage communities within the surrounding neighborhoods of Green-Wood. The artist will be provided an honorarium and studio space in the Historic Landmark Gatehouse on Fort Hamilton Parkway, as well as access to the Cemetery’s professional staff and archives and historical collections. The 9-month residency will take place January – September 2021.
