Ryota Aoki’s New Ceramics Laboratory Vol. 2September 10, 2009 (Thursday) to October 10 (Saturday)”Bijoux is a work first created by Aoki when he spent a half a year studying at the L’Ecole des arts décoratifs in Geneva. Bijoux, in French a “jewel,” is a white porcelain work produced from a mold shaped like 2 joined bowls. Its surface has the velvety soft texture of a baby skin. Each piece is finished by boldly cutting away a part of the original to create a unique work. Aoki infuses the clay with a special glaze he has developed after long study, then in the kiln the glaze is slowly forced out of the clay to coat the snow white porcelain. Bijoux’s secret is its ability to combine an icing flower-like fragility and jewel-like solidity. For his second act, Aoki has used the interplay between large and small Bijoux to turn the Gallery into an ethereal space that feels as though one had wandered into a new dimension.”Ippodo Gallery
