It is the intent of the our Artist-in-Residence program to provide a space for emerging artists, including recent graduates, to enable them to develop and enhance their practice in their chosen medium. Applications will be reviewed and selections awarded by a committee comprised of directors of our School. The program will host two artists each year, one in each of our two terms:

Winter Term: February 14, 2022 to May 20, 2022
Application Deadline: August 31, 2021
All winter term applicants will receive notice on their application status by September 30, 2020.

The Artist-in-Residence will have 24-hour access to an independent studio space at the Lunenburg School of the Arts located in the heart of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, a UNESCO World Heritage site and hub for arts, culture, and music.

The Artist-in-Residence will receive a stipend of $500.00 (CDN) per month and is responsible for her/his own material costs and sourcing. This program is a studio only residency; the Artist-in-Residence is responsible for her/his own living and travel arrangements and expenses.

A public exhibition of the work completed here by the Artist-in-Residence will be held at the end of the term at the School, together with a reception hosted by the School. At this event the Artist-in-Residence is expected to give an ‘Artist Talk’ in relation to the work she/he has completed during the term. The School also asks that the Artist-in-Residence provide our School with one piece of art created during the residency period, which artwork will become a part of our School’s archives and may be used for fundraising.

  • Project Brief and Timeline (300 words maximum)
    • Describe materials and process that may be used for this project.

  • Include respective titles, dates, dimensions, and material/medium

call for artists: Michael Miller Scholarship Fund

The purpose of the scholarship is to advance and encourage residency opportunities for artists in printmaking, drawing, filmmaking/videography, painting, and ceramics.

What the scholarship covers:

  • Award: Two-week residency and lodging for 14 days and some supplies (see below).

  • Eligible candidates are artists over 18 years old.

  • Artists concentrating in printmaking will be given precedence by the reviewers. Painters, ceramists and filmmakers/videographers are encouraged to apply for this award also. Scholarships will be granted on quality and content of the artwork, intended project and artist statements.

  • Media that is eligible to be considered for this award:

1.     Print Media – All types will be considered but SkopArt does not have the facilities for lithography or screen-printing.*

2.     Painting of any media, on any surface (may be combined with print media). 

3.     Book Art, film/video animation (may be combined with print media).

4.     Ceramics.*

What the scholarship does not cover:

  • Travel costs and meals (food and drink).

  • Some supplies depending on the requirement of the artist (see below).

*If an artist would like to utilize the printmaking or ceramics facilities, they must have adequate experience in the medium.

The Skopelos Foundation for the Arts has some supplies in ceramics, printmaking and painting. If you plan on making videos or films, you must bring your own equipment. Be aware that certain items based on your medium are not included. We have some water-based printmaking inks, oil-based printmaking inks, low-fire ceramics and some acrylic and oil paints. When you have been informed that you are a grant recipient, we will further discuss your needs.

residency opportunity: Sturt (NSW Australia)

Sturt’s Artist-in-Residence program invites and attracts experienced artists practicing in ceramics, jewellery/metalwork, textiles and woodwork. We house four to six residencies each year.

We encourage small scale production and individually designed work, which may be promoted through Sturt Gallery. Professional residencies may be awarded specifically to develop a body of work which can be produced and made at Sturt during the maker’s time here.

Sturt sees the residency program as an important addition to its overall aim of providing support for Australian contemporary art and design through a program of teaching, retail, exhibition and residencies. The emphasis of the residency program is to support those who embrace this philosophy.

All residency programs are financially assisted by Friends of Sturt.

Residency at Brekka

 GilsfjordurArts offers an artist residency in the remote former farm house “Brekka” for Icelandic and international artists from various disciplines to engage with the landscape and connect with communities in the Westfjords.

We provide visiting artists with a dedicated space and time to create in an environment of open inquiry and free from prescribed outcomes.  We encourage communal interactions in nearby communities through artists talks; projections etc between locals and visiting artists as can be arranged at the venues available.

The very remoteness and rare silence of our location offers incredible insight and energy in to the artists.

This residency is based around its great fjord and mountain location. It is all about remoteness, the fjord, sounds of natures, and being in landscape away from distraction with time to contemplate or make work. Artists will live and work on their own at the Brekka, without any staff present. You will be about 10km from the nearest rural outpost. Planning your supplies is important. This residency is not for everyone, self sufficiency and planning is essential. The residencies are timed to the rural bus schedule from Reykjavik (bus 57 and 59) about 3 1/4 hours.

2020 residency applications.

The fees for residency at Brekka runs from 700 to 900 euros per each 25 day residency depending on room choice. The shared studio fills the top floor of the farm house, bedrooms , kitchen, sitting room and bathroom, boot room, storage rooms, and laundry are on the ground floor. Artists are responsible for transport to the residency and their own food.
