The Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery is calling for submissions to the 2021 Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics. In order to be considered, applications for the award must be received electronically by Friday, April 30, 2021.
This prestigious national award allows practicing emerging ceramic artists to undertake a period of independent research, or other activities that advance their artistic and professional practice. The winner of the Award will receive $10,000. The selection is made by a jury comprised of respected contemporary ceramic artists and other arts professionals.
The winner and up to five finalists will have their work featured in a group exhibition at the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery from September 2021 to January 2022. The exhibiting finalists will receive an artist fee commensurate with the current CARFAC Fee Schedule. The Award will be presented at the opening reception, held at the Gallery in Waterloo on Sunday, September 26that 2:00pm. Transportation and accommodation will be provided to the winner, as required. In order to be eligible for the Award, applicants must be available to attend the reception on September 26th and be prepared to make a brief artist talk. All details related to the exhibition and reception are subject to change according to relevant COVID-19 restrictions including dates, attendance, location, and possible online formats. The winner and finalists will be notified in early June.
To apply to the Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics, you must be a Canadian citizen or have Permanent Resident status, as defined by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. You must also meet our definition of an emerging professional artist, which is an artist who:
has maintained a professional practice for five to ten years as of the application deadline date. Professional practice typically begins upon completion of a college or bachelor’s degree in ceramics. If alternate circumstances apply, demonstrate how you identify as an emerging artist in the cover letter portion of the application;
has developed skills through training and/or practice in the field;
operates or has consistent access to a ceramic studio;
has a body of work that incorporates a public presence and peer recognition; and
seeks payment for their work and has an active and engaged practice
Nurielle Stern, winner of the 2019 Winifred Shantz Award for ceramics, was invited by Tony Marsh, Director of the Center for Contemporary Ceramics at California State University, Long Beach, to be a visiting artist at the Center in 2020. Of her experience, Nurielle stated:
The Winifred Shantz Award combined with a Canada Council Arts Abroad Grant afforded me the opportunity to travel for this residency in order to produce large-scale ceramic sculptural pieces. During this residency, I was able to access the school’s amazing facilities to create ambitious work beyond what would be possible in my Toronto studio. It was a unique opportunity to learn from and receive feedback from peers and to make international connections with other visiting artists and become familiar with some of the galleries and museums in L.A. The CSULB Center for Contemporary Ceramics is a high profile residency, and I’m incredibly honoured to have been chosen for this opportunity. My fellow artists in residence in winter 2020 included Simone Leigh, Heidi Lau, and Sharif Farrag, among others. Many thanks to Tony Marsh, the Shantz Family and The Keith and Winifred Shantz Fund for the Arts, the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery, and the Canada Council for the Arts.

The late Winifred Shantz was a driving force for the arts in Waterloo Region for more than 40 years. A successful ceramist, entrepreneur and visionary philanthropist, she was committed to finding ways to enable artists to reach their full potential.
Officine Saffi awards those artists who have chosen ceramics as their main expressive language for a research between contemporary art, collectible design and craft. Now in its fourth edition, the competition is open to all contemporary artists and designers of any age, whether emerging or established, individuals or members of collectives, and with no restrictions on theme, gender or nationality. 2020 Focus: Ceramics
The Chrysalis Award was created by the James Renwick Alliance to encourage and assist emerging visual artists. Emerging is defined as someone early in their artistic career, without regard to age, who demonstrates excellence in their work and a commitment to developing in unique and dynamic ways, but without major gallery representation or significant exhibition history.
Our 2020 award will focus on emerging artists working in the CERAMICS field. In future years, we will solicit nominees in other media. The awardee will be selected by an independent panel of jurors. The 2020 Chrysalis Award was generously made possible by JRA member, Rebecca Ravenal.
The awardee receives a $5,000 unrestricted award, a trip to Washington, DC, for a dedicated occasion to give a formal presentation about their work (all expenses paid), and an opportunity to meet with other artists, collectors, and JRA members. Depending on health concerns/realities, these events may be conducted virtually. To further support emerging artists, especially in light of these tough times, we are offering $3,000+ in additional awards, also to emerging artists working in ceramics.
2020 Award Eligibility
The artist must have completed a four-year academic program or self-directed equivalent training within the past 5 years. Residencies, workshops, and/or a dedicated practice qualify as equivalent training. Applicants may not have had a solo commercial exhibition or be exclusively represented by a gallery or commercial entity.
The applicant must be working in the ceramics craft field and show merit, skill, and innovation in their work. Craft is the creation of original objects through the skillful manipulation of ceramic materials. Qualities that contribute to the success of a craft object include the skill of the maker, the use of the material, the refinement of the design, the originality of expression, and/or its cultural significance. The applicant must have residency in the United States. Applicants are asked to supply 3-5 images of work completed in the past five years and answer all application questions.

It’s Elemental celebrates the talent and creativity of Arizona’s craftspeople by showcasing fine craft work that demonstrates a command of the medium and a high level of workmanship and design. The exhibition will include art created from clay, wood, fiber/paper, metal, and glass. Submitted pieces can be functional or nonfunctional. Participating artists must currently reside in the state of Arizona.
The deadline to apply for It’s Elemental 2018 is September 17, 2018.
Artists are limited to one application. However, artists may apply a second time as part of a collaboration (2 or more artists working together on a work of art). No artist may be part of more than two applications. Each application may include up to three works of art. The exhibition will be juried by a panel of local artists.

The overall Best in Show prize will be $600
A First Prize award will be $300
A Juror’s Award of $100 will be awarded for the “Best of” each of the four categories that are not represented by the above two awards (categories: wood, clay, metal, glass, paper/textile and mixed media)
ABOUT THE EXHIBIT: The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences is pleased to announce a call to artists for our “Plates, Platters, and Nothing Else Matters” exhibition. “Plates, Platters, and Nothing Else Matters” is a National Juried Competition of ceramic works. Tableware up to 12“ inches in diameter will be displayed on shelves, other work must be wired for wall hanging. The deadline for submission is May 1st, 2018.
Our juror, Roberto Lugo, will select approximately 80 works for exhibition. The juror will award a prize of $500 to the artist whose work earns first place, $300 for second place and $200 for third place. There will be an additional $1000 “Muddies” prize. The winners will be posted on our website following the reception, where the prizes will be awarded. You do not have to be present to receive the award. The competition and exhibition is open to emerging as well as established artists. Please refer to the exhibition guidelines for complete details below.
JUROR:We are very pleased to have Roberto Lugo as our juror. Lugo is an American potter, social activist, spoken word poet, and educator. Lugo’s work draws together hip-hop, history and politics into formal ceramics and 2D works. Born in Philadelphia to Puerto Rican parents, Lugo began his career as a graffiti artist before discovering ceramics.
