An update from Medalta and a reminder to get going making those spoons!

Medalta’s studios are buzzing at this time of year. Our yearlong artists in residence are preparing for their final solo shows in the gallery and a fresh group of six artists are here for the month of June, including KyoungHwa Oh, Medalta’s International Cup Show Winner of a one month residency.

“What a great opportunity, thank you so much for inviting me to the Medalta International Artist in Residence through the Medalta cup show. I have only been here one week, and it has been so great. Not only am I enjoying the studio space and beautiful facilities, but I am getting to meet everyone from the Medalta community who have made me feel very welcome.” – Kyounghwa Oh

We’ll keep you posted on what Kyounghwa is up to in the Medalta studios on … /Medalta’s facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Medalta & in the meantime don’t forget to apply to Medalta’s SPOON ME show to have a chance at a June 2015 residency!
SPOON ME! @Medalta
Medalta’s International Spoon Competition
Deadline for online submissions June 30th, 2014.
Last year was Medalta’s international cup show and we exhibited 150 interpretations of the cup from artists around the world. This year we thought we’d switch things up… we were noticing spoons making a serious comeback and thought we’d focus on this object that has gone in and out of fashion… Spoons are the New Cup!
So this year send us your SPOONS, your ladles, your scoops and your servers. If a spoon is the feature of an object such as a soup tureen or a larger set, send us your soup tureens and sets too. We want to see what you come up with. Not working in ceramics? No problem – this year we are opening it up to our friends in other craft mediums too … clay, metal, glass, wood & fibre.

We are very happy to be working again with the talented Musing About Mud blogger and Canadian ceramic artist Carole Epp. She will have the hard task of Juror, narrowing down the entries and selecting the prize winners.

Speaking of Prizes! Last year we partnered up with Medicine Hat College, and together we gave away a free month long residency at Medalta with accommodation to the Grand Prize winner KyoungHwa Oh. She is in the Medalta studios this June and we are excited to see her creating … she makes some pretty great spoons too.

We’re cooking up even more prizes this year, we’ll update you here as soon as they’re cemented.. but we’re definitely offering a June 2015 residency at Medalta as our GRAND PRIZE! We will also have purchases prizes for the Medalta contemporary collection and several selected artists will be featured on the Musing About Mud blog. For last years featured artists & Carole’s fabulous coverage of the cup show from last year click here.

Check out the complete set of guidelines and fill out an entry form online at www.medalta.org/spoonme.
