12-SU-WK39 Artist Workshop with Jimmy Clark

four day workshop is designed to dispel the notion that pinching is
merely a beginner’s technique. Students will explore numerous
variations on the method including creating large forms, working
intuitively, exploring asymmetrical forms, incorporating found objects,
burnishing and applying terra sigilatta. The pieces will then be smoke
fired at Cheltenham Art Center. Smoke firing is a process in which
bisqued pots are buried in sawdust and smoldered overnight in a kiln.
This results in random and unpredictable smoke patterns on the pots’
surfaces. *The workshop takes place on the 21st and 22nd at The Clay
Studio, and on the 4th and 5th at Cheltenham Art Center. Please call
Sara Gallo, School Coordinator at 215-925-3453 x23 for more details. |

demonstrations of photocopy oxide transfers on leather hard clay, decal
application on glazed objects, and relief decorating on masked
greenware. Some basic tiles will be provided by The Clay Studio for the
leather hard and greenware hands-on portion of the workshop. If
students would like to experiment with applying decals, the Studio asks
that you bring your own gloss-glazed pieces to use.

On July 7 at 5pm Crimson Laurel Gallery will host a lecture by internationally recognized ceramic sculptor Peter Callas at the Historic Mitchell County Courthouse in downtown Bakersville, NC. The Fabric of Clay: Alexandra McCurdy
in collaboration with Burlington Arts Centre
Curator: Gloria Hickey
This career retrospective of work by Nova
Scotian ceramist Alexandra McCurdy is organised around the artist’s
ongoing engagement with textiles. Her work often directly reflects, not
only the surface ornament, but the structural patterning of fibre media.
As curator Gloria Hickey notes in her catalogue essay, McCurdy “has
never made pots about pots or ceramic history,” but “about textiles and
autobiographical ceramics.” The exhibition pairs McCurdy’s ceramics with
their textile and fibre companions and displays them against the
backdrop of the artist’s personal narrative. Saint Mary’s University Art
Gallery produced the full-colour exhibition catalogue in partnership
with the Burlington Art Centre.
Side Gallery
Lorenzen Pottery: 50 Years in the Making
Curator: Victor Owen
The Fabric of Clay exhibition will be accompanied by a small
retrospective of the ceramics of Alma and Ernst Lorenzen- a Danish
immigrant and his Canadian-born wife- who were active in the Maritimes
for four decades, starting in the 1940s, and helped to introduce
modernist ceramics to the region. Dr. J. Victor Owen, of the Saint
Mary’s University Geology department, has assembled a detailed narrative
of their careers and examines the chemistry of their ceramics.
