Revealed: Jun Kaneko
What’s inside the box?
On Tuesday, September 17 at 5:30 p.m.,
artist Jun Kaneko will unveil his monumental art on the steps of the
Gardiner Museum. Afterward, there will be a reception toasting the
artist and the many generous donors and Museum members who helped make
this exciting piece of public art installation happen. The reception
will be followed by a lecture in the Terrace Room where Jun Kaneko will
speak about his work.
“We are extremely excited to present Jun
Kaneko’s art to the City of Toronto, as it is his first major
installation here. The sculpture will become the new face of the
Gardiner Museum and comes at a very proud time for us – celebrating our
30th anniversary later this year,” says Rachel Gotlieb, Interim
Executive Director & Chief Curator.

No stranger to the Gardiner, making his final and only Canadian stop of his Travelling Exhibition
at Toronto’s Gardiner Museum back in 2011. The exhibit featured
larger-than-life ceramic sculptures, some of which were over seven feet
high.
About Jun Kaneko
Jun
Kaneko (American, born Japan 1942) studied painting in his native Japan
as a young man. In 1963, he moved to the United States where he studied
ceramics with a number of influential artists from the California
School, including Peter Voulkos and Paul Soldner. Although Kaneko is
best known for creating large-scale ceramic sculptures and
installations, painting has remained an important part of his artistic
practice throughout his career. In recent years Kaneko has also branched
out to design opera sets and costumes for several productions in Omaha,
Atlanta, Philadelphia and Vancouver.

AN TE LIU
MONO NO MA
September 7 – November 11, 2013
For MONO NO MA acclaimed artist An Te Liu
is creating a new body of sculptures which explore the spaces around
things. While mono is Japanese for ‘object’, ma is a more elusive term
referring to ‘space’ or ‘gap’, but one which is simultaneously aware of
form and non-form.
Drawing inspiration from artefacts found in
the Gardiner’s Ancient Americas collection, Liu works with the remains
from our contemporary consumer milieu, conjuring new forms borne out of
emptiness – entities poised between the familiar and the enigmatic,
material and immaterial, thing and no-thing.

TORONTO – August 2, 2013 – The Gardiner Museum is excited to present the 3rd Annual RBC Emerging Artist People’s Choice Award,
which recognizes the ceramic artist whose work receives the most votes
from Canada’s participating public with a $10,000 cash prize.
Each
year, a panel of experts nominates five outstanding artists from
Canada’s artistic scene. The talented nominees for 2013 are Robin DuPont (British Columbia), Michael Flaherty (Newfoundland and Labrador), Monica Mercedes Martinez (Manitoba), Amélie Proulx (Quebec) and Linda Sormin (Ontario).
The
Gardiner Museum-appointed nominating committee is comprised of artists,
educators, art critics, and/or curators from different regions across
Canada. Each of these five experts is invited to select an emerging
artist for nomination. To be eligible, participating artists must be
Canadian citizens or permanent residents, out of school, practicing for
at least three years and no more than 10 years. They also must have
participated in at least one exhibition at a recognized gallery, museum
or other arts organization.
The five selected artists have the
opportunity to showcase new works created specifically for the
competition, which will be on display at the Museum from September 3 – October 15, 2013, with voting closing on October 13, 2013.
During this time, visitors are invited to vote for the artist of their choice, either at the exhibit or online by clicking here. The Gardiner Museum will post voters’ comments on its website to stimulate dialogue about Canadian art and ceramics.
The
winner of the 3nd Annual RBC Emerging Artist People’s Choice Award will
be announced at a public reception at The Gardiner Museum from 5:30 –
7:30 pm on Tuesday, October 15, 2013.
This year’s nominees were chosen by the following panel: Katrina Chaytor, Ceramics Faculty, Alberta College of Art + Design, Calgary; Bruce Cochrane, Ceramic artist, Mississauga, Ontario and former head of ceramics, Sheridan Institute; Gloria Hickey, Curator and writer on crafts, St. John’s Newfoundland; Jean-Pierre Labiau, Curator of Exhibitions and Decorative Arts, Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec; and Grace Nickel, Professor Ceramics, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg;

The Gardiner Museum, Kathy Venter – LIFE opens May 30, running until September 15, 2013.
Featuring
this celebrated ceramic artist, internationally recognized for her
life-size figurative sculptures, the exhibit introduces dialogues with
time, femininity, and community, capturing the continuity of the human
condition.
The exhibition presents a large installation of
Venter’s sculptures which she produced in series, including One,
Revision, Ostraca, Immersion, Coup d’Oeil and the never seen before
Metanarrative. Most of her figures are presented full scale – standing,
sitting, reclining or suspended by cables in space – while others are
limited to heads and torsos. Each work is direct and engaging; life-size
and nude. They are a measure of our humanity. Their strong presence
derives from the artist’s intimate engagement with her models – most of
which are women – who posed over long hours in her studio.
“We
are extremely excited to present Kathy Venter – LIFE at The Gardiner
Museum this summer,” says Rachel Gotlieb, Interim Executive Director
& Chief Curator, Gardiner Museum. “Kathy Venter chooses the
terracotta as a primary medium to explore the history of representation
of the female figure. This dramatic installation stimulates discussion
about sculptural praxis in contemporary art.”
Venter describes
each work as “a slow construction” by which she “applied the clay, piece
upon piece, within a silent dialogue between the model and myself,
comfortable with my medium and tradition, accepting of their
constraints.” The forms are built from the feet up using the traditional
coiling and pinching techniques, without the use of life cast molds or
internal armatures. The sculptures’ surface treatment is inspired by the
Tanagra figures of the Mycenaean period, encrusted and worn from
centuries of burial.
The exhibition is curated by Montreal author and critic John K. Grande.

Lecture: Hands On: The Figurative Tradition in Terracotta Sculpture: June 20, 6:30 – 8 p.m.
Dr.
Betsy Bennett Purvis, Lecturer in Renaissance Art History, University
of Toronto, will examine a variety of figurative terracotta sculptures
from the Renaissance to the present, with a special emphasis on
life-likeness and the materiality of terracotta itself. Cost: $15 general admission, $10 for members
