Residency Description:
The
Genesee Pottery is looking for two committed, community-minded clay
artists to be a part of our dynamic studio. Residents responsibilities
include glaze mixing, clay reclaim, studio maintenance, help with load
in/load out and sales in the Firehouse Gallery, and teaching classes.
The Residents are expected to contribute bowls to the Pottery’s annual Great Bowls of Fire Chili Fundraiser,
and to produce a cohesive body of work for a two-person show in the
Firehouse Gallery. While BFA or MFA candidates are preferred,
applicants are juried by a staff panel and emphsis is put on the
portfolio’s quality of work and the candidates expressed desire to be a
part of a community studio. There is no bias or preference for
functional work over sculptural or vice-versa.
Residents are
given materials at cost, and free firing, as well as studio space and

studio/gallery/teaching per week. The residency begins September, 2012

About this project
The Genesee Pottery in Rochester, New York is a nonprofit ceramic studio housed in an 1895 firehouse. Where the fire horses used to be stabled is our kiln room, which houses our 40 year-old workhorse of a gas kiln.
In the past years we have brought many of our practices up to newer, safer standards and we need to do the same for our firing procedures. The gas kiln is and has always been an integral part of our firing process. We are the only ceramic studio in the region to offer this service to the community.
As we celebrate our past 40 years with our retrospective show “Ten-Nineteen” we would like to replace the old workhorse with an ecologically sound, high efficiency kiln, to prepare ourselves for the next generations of Genesee potters.
Genesee Pottery was founded in 1972 and is located in the historic firehouse at 713 Monroe Ave in Rochester, NY. Genesee Pottery is one of Rochester’s premier community based ceramics facilities, serving an active community of students, renters, instructors and artists-in-residence. Our comprehensive studio facilities and 24 hour access available to our Artists-in-Residence and renters is unparalleled in the region.
