call for entry: Monumental Ideas/Intimate Scale: A National Juried Exhibition

Eligibility
Open to all artists 18 years or older presently residing in the United States and territories.

Juror
Benjie Heu, Professor of Ceramics, Southeast Missouri State University
Benjie Heu has a M.F.A degree in ceramics from Ohio University (1998) and a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Montevallo (1994) with an emphasis in ceramics, sculpture and printmaking. In between degrees, he studied ceramics at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth (1995). Benjie maintains an active exhibition record of solo, group, juried, and invitational exhibitions.

Awards
Cash awards will be given for Merit Award and Best of Show.
Awards will be announced at the Opening Reception on Friday, February 6, 2015 from 5 – 7 pm. Sales and Commissions Southeast Missouri State University refers interested buyers directly to the artist. The University does not take any commission on sales of artwork.

Specifications
All 2D and 3D media are eligible. Entries must be original art completed in the last three years (2012 – 14).
Maximum size of the artwork is 9”x9”x9”, including frame or case.
Two – dimensional works must be framed and wired for installation.
Three – dimensional wall pieces must include hanging hardware.
Please note that the gallery walls are drywall on metal studs – there is no plywood backing.

The Juror reserves the right to disqualify any work not suitably presented or that varies from the submitted image.

Shipment and Delivery
Shipping artwork to and from the exhibit is the financial responsibility of the artist. All artwork must arrive in packaging suitable for return shipping with a prepaid shipping label with UPS or FedEx included. Artists are responsible for their own insurance during to and from shipping. Shipping cartons must be reusable and within shipping guidelines. Please use professional grade boxes. No packing peanuts allowed. Late or damaged work will not be exhibited. Hand deliveries would be accepted January 26 – 29, with prior arrangements made with the Gallery Coordinator at [email protected]. Works must be labeled with artist’s name, title of work, media, and price on the back or bottom of artwork.

Liability
Receipt of your submission constitutes your agreement with all conditions established in this prospectus. Although the utmost care will be taken in handling the artwork and there is always a Gallery Attendant on duty while the gallery is open to the public, Southeast Missouri State University will not be responsible for damage or loss. We recommend that you carry your own insurance. Consent to reproduce works photographically, for publicity purposes, is assumed to be granted.

Image Files
Up to three Image Files will be submitted via the website as listed below in Entry Procedure. Each image file should not exceed 1.5 MB. Please label each image file with the title of artwork (e.g., TitleofArtwork.jpg).

Entry Fee
The non – refundable entry fee is $20 for up to three works of art. Payment should be made by credit card (MasterCard, Visa, Discover) via the website listed below in Entry Procedure.

Some information about my work:

My research investigates the use of ornament in Western culture, aesthetic reactions to Modernism, and our culture’s obsession with image, appearance, and fabricated “natural” designs. I am interested in themes of repetition, pattern, obsession, accumulation, sex/gender, and the handmade. Through the disciplines of installation and ceramic sculpture, my practice explores the dichotomies of craft and fine art, nature and technology, the handmade and machine. The 19th Century practice of conventionalization and reduction of the plant form in order to confirm to anthropocentric systems of order, as well as its contemporary manifestation, is precisely the type of appropriation I am interested in.

Eva Hesse

Why Eva Hesse inspires me:

Eva Hesse’s work has a unique relationship to materials and process. She was obsessed with absurdity, and her organic manipulation of the physical properties of sculpture often referenced the female body. Hesse is an inspiration to me because she was making work that spoke to the realities of being a woman in the 1960s art world in New York, without being literal or cliché.

 
Cal Lane

Why Cal Lane inspires me:

The work of Cal Lane shifts traditionally female ornate sources such as doilies and tablecloths onto metal tools and objects which are traditionally gendered male. She calls to mind all things feminine with her lace cutouts: lacemaking, cake decorating and traditional “women’s work”. Using a plasma torch, Lane makes lace like patterns out of rusted metal objects such as shovels, cars, or other industrial tools and transforms them into fragile, flower-patterned cutouts. I am inspired by Lane’s use of organic patterning and her subversion of traditional gender roles in our contemporary society.

 
Yayoi Kusama

Why Yayoi Kusama inspires me:

Like Hesse, Yayoi Kusama was also a female artist in New York in the 1960’s, although she spent considerable time in her native country Japan. She began to cover everyday objects with white phallic protrusions, rendering them at once absurd and threatening. She has a very obsessive personality and speaks openly about her mental illness and hallucinations of millions of dots. Her work with accumulations and repetition fascinates me, and I want my work to be simultaneously attractive and repulsive in the same way Kusama’s work operates.

resident artist opportunity: The Ceramics Center

The Ceramic Center located in the beautiful NewBo area, in Cedar Rapids Iowa, is looking for a Resident Artist to begin on January 5th, 2015.  Applications are due November 5th, 2014.
The
 purpose of our unique program is to provide emerging ceramic artists
with an environment – the space, facilities, time and professional
interaction – that will foster and further develop their ideas, skills,
abilities and focus as ceramic artists.
The
Ceramics Center can accommodate up to six Resident Artists. Residencies
are typically for a 12 month period of time. Longer or shorter terms
can be negotiated as necessary and appropriate.

 

Each Resident Artist Will Receive

•     A personal work space
•     24/7 access to the facilities
•     Free enrollment in all special workshops and seminars, space permitting
•     Access to ceramics professionals in the area for consultation and feedback
•     Clay, glazes and personal glaze chemicals at a reduced cost and unlimited use of our kilns at no cost.
•     Opportunity to teach a variety of classes at the Center
*Housing, food and travel are not provided to the Resident Artist.

Decorated
plate from St Petersburg. Neil MacGregor, Director of the British
Museum, explores the Russian Revolution by looking at a plate painted
with propaganda for the new Communist state. The plate was made at the
Imperial Porcelain Factory, St Petersburg, in 1901 but was decorated 20
years later in the same factory, which had become the State Porcelain
Factory in the newly-named city of Petrograd. With contributions by
Mikhail Piotrovsky and Eric Hobsbawn.
