Next Show:
Michael Kline

Michael
Kline has recently participated in many of AKAR’s group exhibitions.
This week he has his own show where we see even more of his wood fired,
salt glazed work. The flora on Michael’s utilitarian pottery is inspired
by the mountains of North Carolina. In his own words, “Strong pottery
form and patterns that evoke the complexity of this natural environment
continue to guide my interests in this current body of work”.

Next New Work:
Doug Navarra

New
Yorker, Doug Navarra, has participated in our Yunomi Invitational since
2011. This month is the first that we’re showcasing a variety of his
utilitarian work. Doug’s pots are focused on what he considers “a living
tradition”. He wants his work to have a sense of timlessness as well as
a feeling of present time. Doug wants his pots to express themselves
through the balance of glaze and form, and not to be overpowered by
special effects.

Shows opens this Friday, January 25th, at 9:30 AM in the Iowa City gallery and online at 10:00 AM CST.

Upcoming at AKAR: Judith Duff and Ron Meyers

AKAR Design Home page
Upcoming Show
Next Show:
Judith Duff and Ron Meyers

Two
potters; often working in familiar methods to educate us in how we blur
the lines of sculptor and potter; artist and craftsman, enduringly
prolific and memorably recognizable. Ron Meyers, a Georgia artist and
educator, has invited close friend, Judith Duff, to accompany him this
month at AKAR Gallery. While both artists employ the wood and salt kilns
as a means by which to finish their work, Duff’s work can be described
as more sculptural, multi-surfaced and angular while Meyers’ selection
is often functional, illustrative and at times confrontational. With
carved and painted anamorphic depictions on the vessels, Meyers appeals
to the animalistic creativity in us all. Duff relies more on subtle
shapes,
colors and lines to create introspective and composed work. Opening
September 28th, we are delighted to have these artists return to our
gallery with New Work by Lauren Gallaspy.

Next Featured Artist:
Lorna Meaden
This
month we are drawing attention to the richly ornamented work in our
gallery by Lorna Meaden. The surface details of her pots are inspired by
the embellishments on clothing and costumes; often she references
stripes and polka dots. Lorna is concerned that we are moving away from
objects that are made by humans for humans. “The handmade object serves
as an illustration of the individual, the unique, the useful.”

Next New Work:
Lauren Gallaspy

We
are proud to announce Lauren Gallaspy as this month’s New Work artist.
Lauren always seems to put her best foot forward for the gallery and
once again we have been rewarded with intimate drawings and new forms.
Bringing conscious thoughts to a third dimensional calling is taxing to
say the least, “… on the best days, I’m B’rer Rabbit, shoving myself
into a Tar Baby trap until we’re both unrecognizable, and I’m left a
mess and laughing”. Lauren comes through again, leaving us all in a
contemplative yet satisfied “mess” this month.

Shows opens this Friday, September 28th, at 9:30 AM in the
Iowa City gallery and online at 10:00 AM CST. View the show at

Coming up next at AKAR…

Next Show:
Image and Form
A
contemporary bombardment of imagery brought on by relentless
advertising and unyielding production of photographs have left many of
us forgetting that often these images are more than a visual
representation; instead possess shape, take form, and live in our third
dimension. There’s a depth to be considered.

Nine potters now give us the chance to investigate what it means to consider image and
form. Primarily through decal transfers these artists represent not
only the visual but rather the visual in conjunction with the tangible.
How do they come together? Where do they meet? And what’s it mean to
bring an over saturated world of images into the intimate processes of
handmade ceramic? All questions to be considered when viewing Image and Form, from July 6th-20th.

Artists participating: Dan Anderson, Israel Davis, Andrew
Gilliatt, Julie Guyot, Erik Haagensen, Forrest Lesch-Middelton, Justin
Rothshank, Jane Shellenbarger, and Rimas VisGirda.

Next New Work:
Mitchell Spain

“…inventiveness
can come out of necessity to solve or fix a problem. It’s the small
details of ingenuity, the creativeness and resourcefulness used, that I
try to capture in my work.” Working with porcelain, Spain offers us some
truly original and exceptionally outstanding ceramics this month. Upon
first examination, these pots don’t look or feel like pottery at all,
but rather an old oil container or beer can dug up from any Midwest
farming homestead. This is truly amazing stuff, and while Spain
is only fresh out of an undergraduate degree, this young man is showing
skill and potential well beyond his years.
