True North – the phrase comes from the Canadian National Anthem – will survey contemporary Canadian Studio ceramics. The border with Canada is, artistically, an open one: important Canadian Artists live and tech in the United States and some of the most important figures in Canadian ceramics were born in the United States. Representing such a large and diverse country and ceramic culture is not easy. True North brings together established figures and emerging artists. They represent the full geographical sweep of Canada from coast to coast, as well as the full spectrum of ceramic expression  – from uitilitarian pottery to abstract sculptures to mixed media creations. True North: Contemporary Canadian Ceramics is the first of two exhibitions highlighting hte countries that share borders with the United States. The second exhibition, in September of 2015, will feature the work of contemporary Mexican artists.

2014 Regis Master: Walter Ostrom

Walter Ostrom is Northern Clay Center’s 27th Regis Master; he is one of two ceramic artists bestowed with the title in 2014.  The other, Adrian Saxe, was featured in an exhibition in spring of 2014.  The Regis Masters Series began in 1997, and honors senior artists who have had a major impact on the development of 20th and 21st century ceramics.  The Regis Masters Series was originally supported by Regis and Friends and continues today through generous support from Anita Kunin and the Kunin Family, in honor of the late Myron Kunin, a philanthropist and former owner of the Regis Corporation.

Ostrom will add his story to a limited oral history of a senior generation of ceramic artists on Saturday, September 27, at 2 pm, with a free public lecture at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, in the Pillsbury Auditorium.

We are excited to welcome Alwyn O’Brien to Northern Clay Center as a resident artist for the month of September. Stop by to visit her during daytime hours as she creates new work for the exhibition.

O’Brien will join Robert Archambeau for a free lecture on Thursday, October 25, from 6 to 8 pm in NCC’s Library. No pre-registration is required, but seating is limited.

Exhibition artist Rory MacDonald will join us in October for another special event. In addition to visiting with University of Minnesota students during his trip, please mark your calendar for Tuesday, October 21 at 6:00 pm when MacDonald will give a special free presentation at NCC.

The Education Committee invites you to a two part workshop with Mike
Flaherty which will be held in the SPG student room on Saturday, Dec. 14
from 4 – 7 p.m. and Sunday, December 15 from 1 – 4 pm.

First demo (Sat.): puling and pinching large antler forms, arranging for drying, throwing with a template.
Second demo (Sun.): trimming, assembling the antler, setting up a drying armature, carving and smoothing.
Mike will also show us how he decorates with the underglaze he formulates himself. He will also be bringing terra sigillata.
 Participants
will have to opportunity to make and throw with templates. Bring some
clay, your favourite throwing tools, plastic cards such as gift and
credit cards, tools to form/shape the template, i.e. scissors, small
files, punches, etc. 
You will be provided with handouts.
Feel free to bring your camera and/or video camera.

The Gardiner Museum presents: The 3rd Annual RBC Emerging Artist People’s Choice Award

TORONTO – August 2, 2013 – The Gardiner Museum is excited to present the 3rd Annual RBC Emerging Artist People’s Choice Award,
which recognizes the ceramic artist whose work receives the most votes
from Canada’s participating public with a $10,000 cash prize.

Each
year, a panel of experts nominates five outstanding artists from
Canada’s artistic scene. The talented nominees for 2013 are Robin DuPont (British Columbia), Michael Flaherty (Newfoundland and Labrador), Monica Mercedes Martinez (Manitoba), Amélie Proulx (Quebec) and Linda Sormin (Ontario).

The
Gardiner Museum-appointed nominating committee is comprised of artists,
educators, art critics, and/or curators from different regions across
Canada. Each of these five experts is invited to select an emerging
artist for nomination. To be eligible, participating artists must be
Canadian citizens or permanent residents, out of school, practicing for
at least three years and no more than 10 years. They also must have
participated in at least one exhibition at a recognized gallery, museum
or other arts organization.

The five selected artists have the
opportunity to showcase new works created specifically for the
competition, which will be on display at the Museum from September 3 – October 15, 2013, with voting closing on October 13, 2013.

During this time, visitors are invited to vote for the artist of their choice, either at the exhibit or online by clicking here. The Gardiner Museum will post voters’ comments on its website to stimulate dialogue about Canadian art and ceramics.

The
winner of the 3nd Annual RBC Emerging Artist People’s Choice Award will
be announced at a public reception at The Gardiner Museum from 5:30 –
7:30 pm on Tuesday, October 15, 2013.

Rangifer Sapiens by Michael Flaherty opens Feb 4th

Exhibition runs February 4th to March 11thIntriguing and haunting, this solo show of porcelain sculpture by Michael Flaherty is a sober examination of resettlement in Newfoundland and Labrador.

During his three months alone in the resettled community of French Cove on the Grey Islands off Newfoundland’s Northern Peninsula, Michael Flaherty became fascinated with the remnants of the island’s inhabitants–gravestones, pottery shards and antlers. Flaherty’s porcelain sculptures are a fusion of caribou antler and pottery shard with an interesting twist. The shard portion resembles the decomposing bone while the antler section is surfaced with pottery decoration and pattern. A graduate of NSCAD and University of Regina, Michael Flaherty has maintained an active and diverse ceramics practice for the past ten years. Currently he resides in Corner Brook where he is the sculpture technician at Grenfell Campus, Memorial University.
